little did I know

Review

Look back on a moment when you were unaware of an important, often surprising development that became clear later.

nisam ni slutio / slutila; malo sam tada znao / znala

A past self walks calmly toward a closed curtain while a later viewpoint sees the surprising chain of events hidden beyond it.

Memory scene

Freeze the story just before the reveal: your past self sees a tiny blank space, while the narrator now sees the whole twist.

How it sounds

LIT-l did eye NOH

Stress little and know; did supports the dramatic inversion.

Build the sentence

Little did + subject + base verb, often followed by that / how / what

Little did I knowthat the delay would save us from the storm

Use it

Little did I know that the person beside me would become my business partner.

The narrator reveals later significance that was invisible at the earlier moment.

We thought the detour was a nuisance; little did we know, the main road had already flooded.

The phrase creates a dramatic reversal between what was believed then and what is known now.

Watch out

Because fronted little is negative, use inversion and the base verb: Little did I know, not Little I knew or Little did I knew. It is marked storytelling language, not merely a neutral way to say I didn’t know.

Nearby language

closestI had no idea

The closest everyday alternative, without the same narrative suspense or inversion.

formalI was unaware

More formal and factual; it does not by itself promise a later reveal.

differentlittle do they know

The present-tense version describes what other people remain unaware of now.
